Our Story
Both of us, Mark and Janina, grew up on dairy farms. Mark here in Oregon just five miles down the road and Janina up in Southern Manitoba, Canada. Although the work was hard it was a childhood we both loved and have many happy memories. So naturally, we wanted to give our children the same experiences of a farm we had. Since then we have been blessed with four children whom we hope will share the same sentiment as us. Being a niche farm their perspective may be a little different than that of their parents conventional way of growing up but hey a farm is a farm.
Each morning (for three of the four seasons) we are blessed to have a beautiful sunrise, which gave us the idea for Rising Sun Dairy. There’s no better view of the sun rising with the cows in the pasture. Out on pasture is where the cows should be. We rotate them in different pens so that they can always have access to fresh grass through the spring and summer. We supplement their grass diet with grain, minerals and corn, for nutritional support so their bones and muscles stay strong. In the winter when they aren’t able to have access to pasture we feed alfalfa hay and clover silage.
We milk our cows twice a day. Each cow is milked for about five minutes, and then they are off for the rest of the day to lounge and produce more milk. Our farm store is open on Tuesdays and Thursdays to purchase our milk and ice cream.
